When we think of stars, point at one at a distance and call it ours, it is natural to want to know how that star relates to us in the universe. Our sun is just a small dot compared to some of the giant stars. The StarViewer is a simple means to show you how your chosen star compares to our sun - Sol. With our Sun at the center we plot three consecutive circles, each of which is 1/3 of the total distance from our sun. In other words if your star was 100 light years away from the sun each circle would represent about 33 light years. This unit is chosen to accommodate the farthest known star in the Milky Way Galaxy.

Then we plot your chosen star at an accurate scaled distance from the sun - both horizontally and vertically. This will give you an idea of far away your star and how large or small it is in comparison with a star we know and love. You will also be able to compare the visible features of that star. notice that some the star on the starviewer at place the sun at the centre of a circle.

Click on the left mouse button to change the orientation of the figure and view your star from various angles. Rotate the mousewheel to zoom the StarViewer in or out.

You will see all your claimed stars mapped out on the StarViewer when you click on "My Stars" on your personalized page after logging in.
